Year 6 had a very interesting and engaging Autumn term focusing on their history theme ‘Once Upon a Time’ learning about their topics ‘WW1’ and ‘The partition of India’ (who is Year 6's global partner).
During the first half term (when they also read ‘Private Peaceful by Michael Morpurgo) the children had a visit from Mr Barber with the ‘mobile planetarium’ who presented a WW1 trench experience. Some of the children commented, "It really felt like you were in the trenches, learning about daily life, survival and how they fought the war from the trenches."
Later in the term they visited the War Horse Farm near Iddesleigh, there they experienced walking through a reconstructed trench complete with realistic sound effects. They learnt about Michael Morpurgo’s inspiration for his book ‘War Horse’ whilst absorbing many facts in the museum, as well as other WW1 facts and about Morpurgo’s other books. In addition whilst there, they also covered some PSHE, learning about Morpurgo’s charity ‘Farms for City Children’, how to look after the cows in the dairy farm and milk them, looking after the local environment and learning about the fauna and flora on a walk around the farm trail.
Following on from this, they began to read ‘Night Diary’ by Veera Hiranandani, the story from a young girl’s viewpoint about the partition of India in 1947. As well as the history learning, they also learnt about general geographical facts of India, the culture and religion. They all really enjoyed their visit from Natasha during the ‘Bollywood Day’ where the children learnt and performed a Bollywood Dance, had a henna design on their hand, as well as learning about other elements of Indian culture like the clothing and religion.
