Year 6 have been exploring bridge structures in DT, researching their development over time and considering the strengths and design features of arch, beam, truss and suspension bridges.
After identifying triangles as a particularly strong and stable shape that is often used in engineering and construction, children worked collaboratively to create prototype bridges to see for themselves how triangles can distribute force, measuring how many place value counters their bridge could hold. Using their observations from this investigation, they will tweak their designs and bring in further research over the next few weeks as they work towards building their final bridges.
It was wonderful to hear children using their Building Learning Powers as they worked well together, particularly valuing resilience and the benefits of ‘finding another way’ if things didn’t go to plan - safe in the knowledge that mistakes will help them improve their design next time!
