Year 5 Ashmolean Learning

Year 5 have been learning about Ancient China, focusing in particular on the Shang Dynasty. The Ashmolean museum in Oxford has a fantastic collection of artefacts from this period, and we were thrilled that they were able to share them with us via a video call.

The children were able to see real life examples of what they have learned about, including bronze wine vessels, jade dragons and weapons. They were also taught some Chinese symbols that were used during the Shang Dynasty, and then had the opportunity to have a go at writing them themselves using ink. They then listened to some stories from the period involving dragons and bats!

The video call was a fantastic opportunity to bring their learning to life.

What the children had to say:

Brooke “I liked painting the Chinese characters.”

Ana “ I enjoyed seeing the jade and learning about them.”

Jack “I enjoyed colouring the bats.”

Alanna “I liked it when we all knew that she was showing us oracle bones.”

Izzy “I liked learning about the bronze artefacts.”

Jo “I enjoyed listening to everyone’s responses when we were asking questions.”

Avinash “I learned that jad was used to make blades.”

Archie “I liked seeing the bronze weapons and the jade artefacts.”
