A Look Back at Bude 2024

Bude Reflections by Rupert Thorne

The start of the journey

At the beginning of the Year 6 residential to Bude, our parents had to drop children off at the school hall. There were loads of different emotions shown: some people were nervous, some happy, some sad and some were anxious about going. As soon as we arrived, our nerves had gone and most of us were ready for an adventure. After that, we found out what our room numbers were and who our roommates were. Then we all dropped bags off.

The entertainment

Every night there was different entertainment. On Monday there was a five aside football tournament; you were allowed seven players but only five were allowed to be on the pitch at once. One of our teams that entered came second place the team name was Galacticos and the seven players were Elliott, Rupert, Alfie, Cory, James, Charlie and Jesse.

On Tuesday night the entertainment was a basketball tournament and fancy dress. The winners of the fancy dress competition were 'The Smurfs' from Bluecoat Primary School!  They were Indi, Hermione, Indie, Lily V, Hollie and Nancy, who were each dressed up as a different smurf.

On Wednesday there was a talent show. We had a winner from our school who sang a song that he made called Smooth as a Fruit; Cai Duggon was the songwriter! There were loads of other schools taking part and many people watching but after some encouragement by his friends he decided to go up on to the stage to sing a song he had been waiting to perform in front of his classmates and all his friends.

On Thursday it was our final night and we ended it on a blast. We had games to play such as relay races, we had a party with some Just Dance, they had a presentation where different awards were given out to a pupil from each group, and after that they had some music to sing along to. They had set up a marquee to have the presentation in and there were three different awards: The Bottle (this award was for the person who conquered their fear); The Joker (this award was for the person who would make everyone laugh); The All-Round Superstar (this was awarded to the person who was always doing the right thing using our manners and always being engaged). The people who got this award in our school were Harry and Rupert.

Activities

There were 14 different activities that they had arranged over the five days we were there. Some activities were inside the building, some were outside the building and some were off site. All of them were a lot of fun!

The activities were bodyboarding, adventure trail, assault course, high-ropes, climbing, bouldering, surfing, kayaking, canoeing, caving, running, swimming (in an outdoor sea pool), treasure hunt around Bude, mountain boarding.

Some were challenging, some were easier for some than others and some were just something new to try and have an amazing experience. Quite a few of the activities encouraged the pupils to try new things and in the end everyone enjoyed it. There was a lot of teamwork and we could see all of the Building Learning Powers in action throughout the week, from resilience to reciprocity and resourcefulness!  Many children overcame fears of heights on climbing and high ropes activities, battled against the wind in kayaks and canoes, faced fears of the dark and small spaces in the caving; it was a week of feeling proud!

Overall, everyone had an amazing time and it will be remembered for a long time!
