Adventure Bude - Year 6 Residential

Last month, some of of year 6 cohort headed to sunny Bude for a week-long residential at Adventure Bude. The place lived up to its name and did not disappoint with the children experiencing a whole host of activities taking them out of their comfort zones and encouraging perseverance and resilience.

Here are some accounts from the children:

"I've been proud of myself for trying out new clubs and new activities this year - particularly  like when we went to Adventure Bude for the week where we did Bodyboarding, a fact hunt going around Bude, Canoeing, Rock Climbing, High ropes, Kayaking, Surfing, Caving and mountain boarding!

For Bodyboarding and surfing we had to use wetsuits (which were a struggle to get on but in the end, we managed). We learnt new techniques to help us when we were in the sea and they actually helped out alot. During the fact hunt it was a lot of walking but luckily we got to take a few rests and then we got walking again. When we did the canoeing we had to go down the river Neet and we played some fun games such as fruit salad and then when we played Simon says we had to jump into the water and I struggled to get back in so I had to go to the river bank! Then on Wednesday,  we had to do the rock climbing and high ropes. On the rock climbing I nearly gave up because I struggled to make it past the first couple of rocks but with the high ropes I did Jacob's ladder and Twist ‘n Turns. It was a great experience for hopefully most of us with lovely breakfasts, lunches and dinners too.

On Thursday we got to go surfing and kayaking. First we did Kayaking and it was only the single seaters. When I first got in, I couldn't paddle properly and I kept spinning around in circles!  Eventually, though,  I got the hang of it and managed to do half decent in the games we played such as 'world domination’ where we choose a country and we had to try and make others a part of our country and we also played it as biscuit world domination. Then we had to do the surfing which I found really fun - even though there were jellyfish in the sea which made me go a bit closer to shore -  but I managed to stand up on the board and catch some waves which was really fun. After we had to go and clean off, then it was dinner time and it was out for the last night before we came home. We woke up the next morning to no swim or run, which we previously had to choose between each morning, so we just had our breakfast and got on with our activities which were caving and mountain boarding.  We jogged over to a sloped  field to do the mountain boarding which I found really fun and I sort of fell off once and luckily we got some help to get onto the boards so we could ride down the hill easier without falling in a painful and awkward way. Eventually we had to de-kit and walk back to the site to have a packed lunch. We got the rest of our money which we spent in the shop and then we put our bags in the coaches then off we went back home.  It was a nice journey back and I missed home but I wanted to stay a bit longer." - Harland

"A few weeks ago we came back from a school trip that lasted a whole week! We did loads of things that were really scary and sometimes I felt I couldn’t do a lot of things, but it always worked out in the end when we persevered. There were even discos and we sang on a stage! It was really fun and quite nerve racking at the same time because there were a lot of different schools there but the songs we chose were actually good songs and they liked them, so they were dancing the whole night! It was difficult to go home in the end, but we had to!" - Ruby

"My favourite memory of year 6 has been where we went to our Bude residential because it was so fun as there were so many activities that we did all day every day without getting bored because they were all so fun! My two favourite parts of the Bude residential was sharing a room with all of my friends. My second favourite part was our 5-a-side football tournament. My team had a manager, Oscar;  Harry, our goalie; Luke and Harry, our centre - backs; Harry, our centre-mid; and then me as our striker and then George  would sub on for me or Harry when we needed him. We’re all best friends so it made it better to spend the week together!" - George
