German Exchange Weeks

Report by Mrs Hogan

During the last week before the May half term and the first week back after half term, Year 5 had 2 fantastic weeks hosting our German pen pals on their exchange trip to visit Great Torrington Bluecoat School.

Our friends, whom some of us visited in March earlier this year, stayed at Braddicks in Westward Ho!  Each Year 5 class spent 3 days doing activities with their respective German classes.  On Tuesday everyone had a brilliant time getting to know each other with 'ice breaker' team building activities followed by a coastal walk along the South West Coastal path beyond Westward Ho! to do some rockpooling, as usual we were so excited to find several tiny cushion stars along with many other sea creatures.  Our German pen pals later enjoyed experiencing local fish and chips on the sea front.

The following day it was exciting to welcome them to our school where we gave tours and went on a quiz tour around Great Torrington town.  Later that afternoon the children enjoyed upcycling and creating art from crisp packets!  After school some of our families very kindly took two or more German pen pals back home to play and host dinner.

On Thursday we all went for a lovely walk on Exmoor, starting from Watersmeet and ending at Lynmouth.  On the route we did a scavenger hunt and once at Lynmouth our pen pals experienced the funicular railway to Lynton whilst we learnt more about the area in the National Park office (as well as enjoying a yummy ice cream!)

On our return that evening, we brought our week to an end with our Global Evening in school where we shared a English style buffet and played games on the playground as well as demonstrating, then teaching, our friends some of the Maypole dances we'd learnt this year!  Once again, our 4th exchange trip brought many lasting memories for our Year 5s and hopefully many lasting pen pal relationships for years to come.

We are already now planning next years exchange trip!
