Year 5 Gingerbread Making

The smell of festive spices filled the air across Chapter 3 on Tuesday, as the children in year 5 made gingerbread.

In Germany (Year 5s partner country), gingerbread is made in two forms: a soft form called Lebkuchen and a harder form, particularly associated with carnivals and street markets such as the Christmas markets that occur in many German towns. The hard gingerbread is made in decorative shapes, which are then further decorated with sweets and icing. Following their recent visit to the Exeter German Christmas Market the children had fresh ideas in their minds.

The children weighed, measured and stirred the gingerbread into dough and then rolled and cut them into a variety of fun shapes. They only needed 10 minutes in the oven, so there was a constant supply of warm and welcoming smells floating around. It was funny how many other pupils and staff popped into Mrs Gibbons’s class that day ‘Just to say hi!’

Alongside the baking, the pupils designed and made a box out of cardboard, covering it in a unique design. Finally, once, the gingerbread had cooled, various shapes and Christmas patterns were added.

Hopefully they will be given as a generous gift from our pupils to those they care for.
