Celebrating the Year of the Ox in Reception

Chinese New Year celebrations in Reception

In Reception we have been learning about how some people celebrate Chinese and Lunar New Year.  We learnt how to say some words in Chinese and also tried writing some Chinese characters.  We made lanterns, sang songs, found out about special celebratory food and activities.  We particularly enjoyed hiding coins inside pretend playdough dumplings for our friends to find.  Some of us were captivated by the lions and dragons we had seen and so used various construction kits and junk to make our own dragons.  We also worked together to make a fantastic dragon head which we then used for our own dragon dance.    It took a lot of skill to work together pretending to be one long dragon body.  We made ‘good luck’ money pouches and tried some traditional Chinese food.  Some of us have even managed to learn how to use chopsticks.  What a brilliant time submerging ourselves in this colourful and exciting celebration.

What the children had to say:

Ava: 'I learnt how to use chopsticks.  First time you use a chopstick I didn’t know, but the second time was easier!'

Connie: 'We have been learning about a race the animals had in the river.  We had a Chinese restaurant.'

Evie: 'They needed a calendar'

Ollie: 'There were 12 animals in the race.'

Edward: 'They have Chinese Dragons.  We wrote our names in Chinese.'

Rita: 'I made a picture on the computer of an ox, it is the year of the ox.'

Max: 'Kung Hei Fat Choi!'

Joey: 'We made Chinese lanterns and lucky money pouches.  The children find them under their pillows when they wake up.  The mums and dads put them there.'
