Bluecoat Netball Team are Back in the Game!

We are delighted that our local league netball matches have been reinstated this academic year after an almost 2 year break as a result of COVID.  This year, the matches were played on Langtree’s new MUGA and as the match fixtures have mostly been in Autumn term, our Bluecoat Club have had a rapid learning curve to be ready to ‘have a go’ after such a long break and with nearly all new players!

It has been a fabulous experience for all the children who played in matches and it did indeed turn out to be a great learning curve in many ways, in particular highlighting areas of play we needed to focus on.  We have also been fortunate to have some extra help from former pupil and member of Bluecoat netball club Frankie Potts. Frankie, who now attends GTS, is supporting Mrs Hogan by helping the team with their netball skills and helping umpire matches to support her Duke of Edinburgh Award.

Each match had a different team captain, who each wrote a report for the team which was later read in Chapter 3 assemblies.  The following is a summary of each of the captains reports:

Report written by Taisiya - Team Captain on the 8th November 2021

Our Bluecoat Netball Club took 8 players to Langtree to play our first match in the Torrington League.  The match was against Bradworthy who won the toss and chose to take centre pass first. We played for quarters and each was six minutes long.  Bradworthy scored one goal in the first quarter, we took a shot but didn’t score. In the second and third quarter neither team scored but there were many missed goals from both sides. In the fourth quarter Bradworthy scored two more goals in the last couple of minutes of the match. The final score was 3:0 to Bradworthy. Even though it was both of our first matches Bradworthy were a very strong and quick side but we showed excellent defense throughout.  The player of the match was Effie.

Report written by Morgin - Team Captain on the 22nd November 2021

Our Bluecoat Netball Club took 9 players to Langtree to play our second match in the Torrington League. The match was against Monkleigh who won the toss and chose to take centre pass first. We played four quarters and each was six minutes long. Monkleigh scored one goal in the first quarter, we took a shot but didn’t score. In the second quarter, Monkleigh scored several more times but there were some missed goals from both sides. In the third quarter Monkleigh scored three more goals as well as the final quarter. Even though it was both of our second matches, Monkleigh were very strong at shooting but we showed excellent defense again throughout the match and persevered.  The player of the match was Poppy who showed excellent defence skills.

Report written by Naomi - Team Captain on the 6th December 2021

Our Bluecoat Netball Club took 8 players to Langtree to play our third match in the Torrington League.  Many players stepped in at the last minute as a result of some team players being off ill. The match was against Langtree and we won the toss and chose to take centre pass first. We played four quarters and each was six minutes long. Langtree scored several goals in the first quarter. In the second quarter, no one scored due to excellent defense skills. In the third quarter, Langtree scored many more goals as well as the final quarter. Langtree were very strong at getting the ball in place and quick. Bluecoat put up a strong battle as a younger less experienced team and used their BLP and did not give up - persevering brilliantly!  The player of the match was Morgin.

Report written by Effie - Team Captain on the 10th January 2022

Our Bluecoat Netball Club took 7 players to Langtree to play our fourth match in the Torrington League which was postponed from Autumn term (unfortunately a couple of players weren’t able to make it). The match was against St. Helens (Abbotsham) and they won the toss and chose which end to shoot so we took centre pass first. We played four quarters and each was six minutes long. We scored a goal in the first quarter. In the second quarter, St Helens scored two goals. In the third quarter, no one scored.  Both schools were very strong at getting the ball in place and quickly, it was a challenged but well-balanced match. In the final quarter, we scored one more goal which drew the game 2 all. The player of the match was Taisiya.

Our club this Spring term now has Year 4 players and we also are hopefully looking forward to a friendly match later this term with Monkleigh with our younger/newer players!
