Year 4 PGL Residential

Last week, children from Year 4 were excited to embark on the first residential visit in almost 3 years! Carys Owen from class 4H shares her report:

"On Wednesday 18th May most of the year 4’s went on a residential trip to PGL on the coach. When we finished taking our bags out of the coach we had lunch on a nice grassy area outside. After lunch we were put into groups. I was put in group 3. So the first activity I did was Archery. We took turns to shoot at the target with a bow and arrow. At the end we played a game. The first shot was where you went, the second shot was who you went with and the last shot was how you got there. Then we went on to do problem solving. Problem solving was where we had to solve a problem. First we had to work out what the teacher was doing. It was really hard. Next we had to work together to move the tyres from one place to another but put them in the same place as before. Then we had to lift out a fake bomb from a ring of cones. Afterwards, it was dinner and then later we had a campfire, sang some songs and ate a toasted marshmallow.

On Thursday after breakfast we put on our swimsuit and wetsuit but only half of it. Then we got a seat on the coach. Before we got onto the coach we were told where we were going. The place we were going  to was the beach at Croyde to go surfing. I caught lots of waves. It was fun when I was being pushed across the water. I stood up balancing on the board. When we got out of the water and were back at the hut and changed we had lunch. I had a sandwich and a packet of crisps. As soon as we got back to PGL we went to our rooms to get a change of clothes, towel and soap. We put our bags in the challenge course bathrooms.  Then we did some outdoor climbing on a man made climbing wall. When we finished we went onto the challenge course. We got so muddy because we had to crawl through the mud.  At the end there was a big muddy pool of water and we got soaked! After we had a shower and had dinner we went to the PGL shop and bought some things. Later after everyone had finished their shopping we went to the disco. Instead of water for a drink there was orange juice and blackcurrant juice.

On Friday - the last day it was also my birthday.  Everyone had signed a card for me and at breakfast I had a cake with a candle and was given a little PGL gift!  Our first activity was street surfing and then fencing. For street surfing we put on knee pads, elbow pads, wrist guards and helmets. Firstly we learnt to get on the board whilst holding someone else's hand and moved across the room. Then we learnt to move across the room only holding one of our partner's hands.  When we learnt to do that we started to generate our own speed but with our partners still generating some speed.  After that some of us started to get on the board by ourselves and started to skate around the room generating our own speed. Later we got onto fencing. For fencing we put on helmets over our faces to protect them also we put on thick fleeces and a glove. When we put on our protective clothing and had it fitted, our instructor showed us what we were doing. To get ready we did a warm up and we were shown what kind of position we needed to stand in and how to move forwards and backwards but still staying in the same position. Then we learnt how to poke each other with the foils (thin swords with a rubber bit at the end) and how to do it safely. When the instructor finished explaining we copied what she said and explained into what we were doing. Before we left we had lunch and lastly with our bags already packed we got into the coach and drove back to school. I had a great time and so did the rest of Year 4; I would really recommend it to next year's Year 4’s if they get the opportunity to go as it was lots of fun!
