Eating the Seasons in Year 5

Year 5 have been learning about “seasonality” incorportating when food might be at its best, as well as considering the impact of importing food from around the world and whether it’s better to “eat seasonally” and buy local produce.

This week, they have investigated which fruit and vegetables are currently in season, and had a tasting session, trying raw and cooked vegetables - most of them were brave enough to try raw onion!

They then made leek and potato soup, a recipe which uses vegetables in season in March. The children tried out their chopping and peeling techniques, and were involved in the preparation and cooking as much as the washing up!

During the day, they also created their own seasonal calendars so that they know when to look out for some of their favourite fruit and vegetables, and calculated the nutritional value of the soup that we made. They went on to investigate other recipes involving seasonal produce - the children busily wrote down some notes and are keen to try these recipes out at home!
