Year 5 Germany Residential

Earlier this month, 17 children from Year 5, excitedly jetted off to Germany to meet their penpals from our global partnership school, Evangelische Grundschule Babelsberg in Potsdam. They received a very warm welcome when they arrived late on Sunday and after some much needed sleep and a spot of breakfast, they enjoyed some icebreaker activities with the German children. They took part in a bridge building activity and then enjoyed playing in the school playground. They visited Berlin where they saw the remains of the Berlin Wall.

It was a jam-packed week which included presenting an assembly to their German peers about life in Devon, a guided tour through Babelsberg and a walk through Potsdam centre. They also experienced the Allied Museum where they saw an exhibition about the Chocolate Pilot! A highlight of the week was visiting host families’ homes for dinner. Towards the end of the week they visited the Potsdamer Platz which is the fastest lift in Europe. Before heading back to the UK, there was a fantastic circus activities session and a spot of souvenir shopping. It was a tiring week, but the children thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

We'd like to thank our hosts and children in Germany for their warm hospitality, the families that welcomed our children into their homes, the Bluecoat staff that accompanied the children on the trip and the parents and carers for collecting the children at a very unsociable hour!
